Malta just launched a new residence concept aimed at digital nomads. The Nomad Residence Permit permits third country nationals to take up a Maltese residence for a year and work remotely from Malta. Such permit can even be renewed further at the discretion of Residence Malta.
The Nomad residence permit holder will continue to retain his current employment or self-employment based in another country and will continue to pay taxes on such activities abroad. Henceforth, beneficially for the applicant, the income generated through such work will not be taxed in Malta.
This permit is targeting individuals who can work remotely and independent of location, via telecommunications technologies.
Applicants must prove they can work remotely, using telecoms, and must prove they fall under any one of the following 3 categories:
- work for an employer registered in a foreign country and have a contract of work;
- conduct business activities for a company registered in a foreign country and of which applicant is partner/shareholder; or
- offer freelance or consulting services, mostly to clients whose permanent establishments are in a foreign country, and with whom the applicant has contracts.
Moreover, an applicant must reach a monthly income threshold of EUR 2,700 gross of tax.
Applicants need to have valid travel documents, have a health insurance covering all risks in Malta, and must show they have a suitable place to reside in which can either be rented or owned property.
With our considerable experience handling residence and immigration clients, we are in the perfect position to assist any interested applicant to understand and apply for this residence permit.
